Historical notes

This is a world standard, used and manufactured nearly everywhere. The 9 mm Parabellum cartridge was created in 1902 by Georg Luger,
who also sired the
Parabellum pistol, a refinement of the complicated
Borchardt system.
The original DWM-made cartridge used an 8 grams (123 grains) truncated-cone bullet available either in an FMJ or a semi-jacketed
design. Jackets were nickel-plated
steel.
The charge (0.35 gram/ 5.4 grains) of smokeless powder pro pelled this bullet at 310 m/s (1,020 fps) for an energy of 384 Joules (283 ft lbs).
The "9 mm Luger" name never was an official designation and results from a marketing ploy. The American A. F. Stoeger company was sole importer between the wars and registered the Luger name in 1923. The Luger name stuck to both the .30 and 9 mm cartridges over the years
and became a standard market-driven appellation.

Handloading notes

9 x 19 mm Parabellum loading data can be used in 9 x 21 mm I.M.I. pistols;
the 9 x 21 mm allowable pressure and C.O.A.L. are the same.
    Standard round-nose or truncated-cone bullet weights are 8 to 8.10 grams (124 to 125 grains). Best adapted powders are Vectan Ba 9 and Vectan Ao.
    Cast or swaged lead bullets give good results in the 9 mm Parabellum.
Slightly faster-burning powders such as Vectan A1 and Vectan Ba 10
are indicated with these.
    There is little use to search for the highest velocities when handloading the 9 mm Parabellum for target shooting. Best results are generally obtained at velocities of 260 to 280 m/s (850 to 920 fps) when match-grade accuracy is the goal.
